WhatsApp messages, photos and voice notes work normally; it is the live calling that is blocked. Two practical answers:

Plan for it and it is a non-issue. Be surprised by it at the hotel and it is an evening wasted.

How much data do you need in the UAE?

More than in most destinations. Dubai is a city of apps, video and ride-hailing, and hotel Wi-Fi is often good but not always free of sign-in hurdles. 1–2 GB per day is realistic:

• Stopover or long weekend (2–4 days): 3–5 GB.
• A week of Dubai plus Abu Dhabi: 10 GB. Careem/Uber, Google Maps, mall navigation, Instagram at every landmark and the desert safari photos add up quickly.

Local tips
