eSIM for Bulgaria: The Complete 2026 Travel Guide

Bulgaria is two different trips depending on the season: ski weeks in Bansko and Borovets in winter, and Sunny Beach, Varna and Nessebar in summer — with Sofia and Plovdiv in between whatever the month. Lift passes, ride apps, restaurant bookings and the group chat all live on your phone. A Bulgaria eSIM makes sure it works the moment you land, without a roaming bill at the end.

Does an eSIM work in Bulgaria?

Yes. Bulgaria has three national networks — A1, Yettel and Vivacom — and a Bulgaria eSIM from AirPlans connects to them at up to 5G in Sofia, Plovdiv, Varna and Burgas, with reliable 4G/LTE at the ski resorts, along the Black Sea coast and on the main roads between them. In the Rila and Pirin mountains the signal holds in the resort towns and on the lower slopes, and fades on the high trails — as it does for any SIM.

Your phone needs eSIM support: every iPhone from XS/XR up, recent Samsung Galaxy S and Z, Pixel 3 and newer, and most flagship Androids. The compatibility list has the full run-down.

How much data do you need in Bulgaria?

Resort Wi-Fi at the ski hotels and the beach hotels is generally decent, so half a gigabyte to a gigabyte a day covers most trips:

  • Sofia or Plovdiv city break (3 days): 3 GB.
  • A ski week in Bansko or a beach week at Sunny Beach: 5 GB. Slope videos and beach photos are what push it up.
  • Two weeks, a family sharing, or working from the apartment: 10–20 GB, or an unlimited plan with a daily high-speed allowance that slows down rather than stops.

Which Bulgaria eSIM plan should you pick?

AirPlans lists more than forty Bulgaria plans, from 1 day to a full year, starting from about $3. Live prices are on the Bulgaria eSIM page and update in real time — what you see is what you pay. Before you choose:

  • Validity starts when you connect in Bulgaria, not at purchase. Install at home; it waits.
  • Top-up is available on most Bulgaria plans from your account, with nothing new to install.
  • Bulgaria is in the EU. Continuing to Greece, Romania or Turkey's European side? A regional Europe eSIM covers the route on one plan — check its coverage list on the product page and compare against a single-country plan.

Set it up before you fly

  • Buy the plan. The QR code arrives by email at once and sits in your AirPlans account under My eSIMs.
  • Scan it from the phone's settings (iPhone: Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM; Android: Settings → Network & Internet → SIMs → Add eSIM). Name the line "Bulgaria".
  • Keep the new line off until you land.
  • On landing: switch the Bulgaria line on, set it as Mobile Data, enable Data Roaming for that line only. Home SIM stays on for calls and SMS, its own data roaming off.

Screenshots for every phone are in the installation guide. About two minutes.

Local tips

  • Getting around: Bolt and Yandex Go work in Sofia, Plovdiv and Varna; at Sofia airport, book at the kerb rather than taking the first taxi that approaches you.
  • Bansko: the gondola base and the town have strong signal; the upper lifts are patchy. Screenshot your lift pass QR code.
  • Sunny Beach and Nessebar: good coverage on the whole strip; the old town of Nessebar is fine too.
  • Sofia metro: covered underground on the airport line, so navigation works into the city.
  • Hotspot: tethering is allowed, so one eSIM can feed a laptop or a companion's phone.

Your own number stays yours

The eSIM is a second, data-only line next to your regular SIM. Your number and WhatsApp are untouched — here is how that works.
