Almost every travel eSIM sold today gives you one thing: data. That is usually enough. You land, the maps work, WhatsApp works, and the people you actually talk to are already in your phone.

Then you need to call the restaurant that does not answer WhatsApp. Or the car hire desk. Or the doctor. Or the delivery driver standing outside a building he cannot find, calling a number that does not ring. That is the moment a data-only eSIM runs out of road.

What you actually get

Texts work in both directions too, which matters more than it sounds: plenty of local services still send a one-time code by SMS and refuse to send it abroad.

The number lives on the same eSIM as your data, so there is nothing extra to install and nothing extra to carry.

Who this is actually for

Anyone hiring a car. Rental desks, roadside assistance and parking companies call you back. They do not use WhatsApp.

Anyone travelling for work. A local number on a business card, a conference badge or an email signature reads differently from a foreign one, and a client calling you does not have to think about international dialling.

Anyone ordering anything. Food, taxis, couriers and tradespeople in most countries call the number on the order. If that number cannot receive calls, the order fails at the last metre.

Anyone who needs an SMS code. Local banking, ticketing, parking apps and delivery lockers frequently send a one-time code by text, and many refuse to send it to a foreign number at all.

What we are not going to pretend

It is a local number, not your number. A UK plan gives you a UK number, a US plan a US number. People who already have your own number will still reach you on it as normal, because your own SIM stays in the phone. But the new number is a new number, and anyone who should call it has to be told what it is.

Data-only is cheaper. If all you need is maps and messaging, buy the ordinary plan and save the difference. Minutes and texts cost money to include, and there is no point paying for them to sit unused.

The minutes are a bundle, not unlimited. Ten minutes is ten minutes. Look at the allowance against how much you actually expect to talk, not at the largest number on the page.

How it works

Buy it like any other plan. The eSIM arrives by email within seconds, and the number arrives with it. Install it by scanning the code or tapping the install link, keep your own SIM in the phone, and choose which one makes calls in your phone's settings.

Validity counts from the moment the eSIM connects to a network abroad — not from the moment you buy it — so you can set it up at home in your own time, days before you fly.
