Activation & Your First Connection Abroad

Guide 5 min read

Your eSIM is installed — now for the moment that matters: turning an installed profile into a working connection at your destination. Go over the pre-flight checklist before you leave, and keep the after-landing section handy for when the wheels touch down.

When does the plan actually start?

Installing the eSIM does not start the clock. On most plans, the validity period begins the first time the eSIM connects to a supported network at your destination. That is exactly why we recommend installing at home: you land with everything ready, and the plan starts precisely when you need it.

Bought well in advance? No problem — an installed, unused eSIM simply waits quietly until you arrive.

The pre-flight checklist

  1. Install the eSIM over Wi-Fi at home (the full installation guide covers every method).
  2. Turn Data Roaming ON for the AirPlans eSIM line.
  3. Turn Data Roaming OFF for your primary SIM, so your home carrier cannot bill you for data abroad.
  4. Set the AirPlans eSIM as the Mobile Data line. Your primary SIM can stay on for calls and SMS.
  5. Save or screenshot your eSIM details page (APN and supported networks) — useful if you need to troubleshoot before you are online.

After landing: the first five minutes

In most cases you do not need to do anything. Turn off Airplane Mode, give the phone a minute, and the eSIM finds a local network on its own — a new network name appears in the status bar and data starts flowing.

  1. Turn off Airplane Mode and give the phone a full minute to register on a network.
  2. Check that the eSIM line shows signal bars and a network name.
  3. Open any website or app to confirm data is flowing.

Nothing happening? Do this

  1. Toggle Airplane Mode on, wait ten seconds, and turn it off again — this forces a fresh network search.
  2. Restart the phone. It is a cliché because it works — especially right after a flight.
  3. Select a network manually: iPhone — Settings → Cellular → your eSIM → Network Selection → turn off Automatic and pick an operator. Android — Settings → Network & Internet → your eSIM → turn off automatic selection and choose one.
  4. Re-check the two key settings: the eSIM is the Mobile Data line, and Data Roaming is ON for it.

The APN: the last piece of the puzzle

If you see signal bars but have no internet, the APN (Access Point Name) may need attention. Open your eSIM details page and compare the APN listed there with the one on the phone: iPhone — Settings → Cellular → your eSIM → Cellular Data Network; Android — the eSIM settings → Access Point Names. If it differs, correct it, save, and restart the phone.

What you will see in your account

A few minutes after the first connection, the eSIM status in My eSIMs changes to Active and the validity dates appear next to it. From that moment the usage bar starts moving — this is the confirmation that activation went through on the network side as well. If the status has not updated yet but you are browsing happily, give it time; the display can lag a little behind reality.

Confirming everything works

Loading a video or running a quick speed test is the surest check. Once data flows, you are set for the whole trip — the eSIM reconnects on its own every time you power the phone on, and on regional plans it switches networks automatically as you cross borders.
